REMEMBER!
Anyone who can afford to provide decent care for the life of a pet (10 to 15 years) can also afford a spay or neuter operation. The cost of the spay or neuter surgery is a one-time expense good for the life of the animal.
The surgery not only prevents unwanted births and discourages straying and fighting, but it prevents many, many health problems.

What To Expect From An Exotic Pet
This section has two purposes: to educate the public about puppy mills and to enable activists to help stop them. Animals in shelters die because people still buy from pet stores rather than adopt. Please ASK your pet store from where their animals come. Some pet supply stores advocate for adoption and even host Adoption Outreaches. Petco, Petsmart, and Pet Food Center are three perfect examples of pet supply stores which take active roles assisting animal welfare organizations. If you are ever concerned about the safety and welfare of an animal, REPORT IT.

No breed of dog is more dangerous than any other. Still, some breeds suffer undeserved bad reputations because of their dangerous (sometimes just dangerously under-educated) owners. This section is intended to debunk the myths which put sweet, loyal dogs in danger.
The overwhelming majority of dogs involved in fatal dog attacks are unaltered (not neutered) chained male dogs attacking unsupervised children.
The Pit Bull is a major target of breed discrimination. A media created monster, not a breed at all, "pit bull" is a slang term that targets three breeds; the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. At the American Temperament Test in 2004, "pit bull" dogs achieved a combined passing score of 86.6%, a higher passing percentage than the Golden Retriever. Although most of the links below are dedicated to education about pit bulls, Rottweiler is another dog breed improperly labeled as "dangerous".

Mainstream medical professionals understand that today's animal-research models are crucial to finding tomorrow's cures. The March of Dimes funds these tests. So do the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation (Race for the Cure), the Pediatric AIDS Foundation, the American Red Cross, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Alzheimer's Association, the American Lung Association, the National Kidney Foundation, the American Liver Society, the American Foundation for AIDS Research, and on and on.
Extreme Animal Rights groups would have you believe that all research using lab animals is cruel, painful, and unnecessary. Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) advises the public to withhold donations from all of these charities, and nearly 100 others. {PCRM president Neal Barnard is also the president of the Foundation to Support Animal Protection (FSAP), which shares a mailing address with PETA. Ingrid Newkirk, PETA's president, is listed as a "Director" of the same foundation. As of 1998, its assets were in excess of $2 million, and its tax filings list both PETA and PCRM as "supported organizations." PETA has given PCRM over $850,000, most of it funneled through FSAP. Barnard is PETA's Medical and Scientific Adviser. And PCRM's Jerry Vlasak serves on the board of the Los Angeles Animal Defense League with PETA's Gary Yourofsky.} In order for many humans and animals to live, some animals must be used in research. These groups believe such a trade-off just isn't worthwhile. Although there have been cases of laboratories operating inhumane programs, most research is carried out under rigorous guidelines set by law, observed and enforced by veterinarians and animal welfare organizations. Virtually every major medical advance of the 20th century involved the use of animals, including antibiotics, vaccines, and treatments for diseases such as diabetes, epilepsy, asthma, and cancer. New medicines are giving millions of people longer, better, more active lives. In the near future, childhood leukemia, heart disease, cystic fibrosis and even HIV/AIDS could be just memories. Whether we're aware of it or not, we all benefit from scientists' work with animals every day.
Animal welfare advocates strict enforcement of the Animal Welfare Act - the major federal statute on protection of animals. Random source, Class "B" animal dealers are of great concern because of the suffering many of them inflict on dogs and cats obtained by illegal means. Class "B" dealers are major suppliers of dogs and cats for laboratories.
Animal welfare strongly supports the 3 R's
:
- Replacement of experimental animals by alternatives.
- Refinement of housing, handling and experimental procedures to reduce discomfort, pain, fear, stress and suffering.
- Reduction of numbers of animals used.
Please take time to learn about the many ways science is advancing health. Tell others what you find out and support the efforts of health education and research programs.

The Asilomar Accords
In August of 2004, a group of animal welfare industry leaders from across the nation convened at Asilomar in Pacific Grove, California for the purpose of building bridges across varying philosophies, developing relationships and creating goals focused on significantly reducing the euthanasia of healthy and treatable companion animals in the United States. Through hard work, lively discussion and brainstorming, a common vision for the future was adopted.

Some Thoughts
Just as there is contention over the ideal human diet, there is strong debate and a variety of opinions on what animals should be fed. Many owners agree their animals have lived long and healthy lives on cheap commercial pet food. Many owners agree that domestic pets have a variety of health problems which stem from commercial pet food. Studies performed by commercial pet food companies indicate that animals fed a regular diet of commercial pet food can live long, healthy lives. Other studies indicate that common ingredients in most commercial pet foods cause anything from allergies to cancer. Some veterinarians caution owners of the serious dangers of feeding bones, and they can cite cases and even show x-rays of intestines clogged or pierced by shards of undigested bone. Other veterinarians insist that a majority of RAW bones are critical for dog and cat health, and that it is COOKING which renders bones too brittle to digest properly. They, too, can cite cases of healthy animals regularly fed raw bones, and can show more studies which prove that dogs and cats need Bio-Active Raw Foods for optimum health. Still others agree that commercial pet food contains dangerous ingredients and bones and raw meat are also dangerous, but explain that Ultra Premium Pet Foods have all the necessary bio-active enzymes without the dangerous preservatives, raw or filler ingredients.
The bottom line is this: feed the best food you can. The more you research, hopefully the better equipped you should be to form your own opinion about what that best food consists.

Vaccination protocols for all animals, including humans, are rapidly changing. Almost all medical authorities agree that vaccinations are an important part of health care. The controversy starts with a question of which vaccinations are helpful and how often they should be boostered. To further confuse matters for us non-veterinarians, there is a trend toward intranasal administration (nose drops) of modified live vaccines to increase efficacy and decrease complications of injected vaccines. There are new modified viral vaccines with substituted nucleic acids that elaborate disease antigens to induce immunity. Are you making an INFORMED choice?
