Together We Can Change The World (TWCCTW) Day

Is your cat a floozy? Spay-neuter now!

We all have the power to make a difference.
Large or small -- we can choose
to BE the difference in our world today.

TAKE RESPONSIBILITY

Be A Responsible Pet Owner First

Spay or neuter your own pets. Adopt your next pet from a shelter or rescue. Provide ID tags and a permanent form of ID (microchip ideally or at least a tattoo) for your animals so they can be returned to you if they get lost. Know the laws (federal, state, and local) pertaining to animals. Ask for help if you are having trouble with your pet - many problems have simple solutions if you are willing to do a little research. Start with your local Humane Society, SPCA, or Animal Welfare league.

Help Your Friends And Neighbors

Tell them about the Spay-Neuter League coupons, Pets ALIVE Spay-Neuter Transports, Neuter Scooter and Terre Haute Humane Society's programs. Let them know that neutered animals are healthier, better pets. Many people do not understand the relationship between pet overpopulation and responsible pet ownership, so lead by example and help spread the word.

Your Community & Beyond

There is so much you can do! Volunteer to help post flyers and brochures, or even print one of our brochures or flyers and post it on your employer's/grocer's community bulletin board, beauty shop waiting room, laundromat, etc. Help us register local animals for the Pets ALIVE Spay-Neuter Transports, or help during the actual Transports. Write a letter to the editor, local government official, your Senator or Representative in Congress, or others who can help with local animal welfare. Donate needed items or money to local programs which help control pet overpopulation. Volunteer to walk dogs or cuddle kittens at a local shelter. Foster an animal who needs extra attention or care before being adopted. Offer to help transport animals from kill-shelters to rescues. Help out at a special event. Learn how to lobby. Contact us or a shelter to volunteer or for many more suggestions.

Cricket's Corner is participating in Blogathon 2006

Blogathon 2006

July 29 (Saturday), 2006 from 9:00am EST and will run for 24 hours straight. The Blogathon is a massive 24 hour online fund-raising event. In Project Blog 2004 (when the folks from Blogathon were on hiatus for the year), Cricket's Corner raised $225 for Terre Haute Humane Society! It works much like a Dance-a-thon or a Walk-a-thon, except that the chosen activity to do for 24 hours is online journaling with a required post every 30 minutes. During each post, one animal from the shelter will be spotlighted. To sponsor Cricket, please register at the Blogathon website, then sign up on Cricket's Sponsor Page, and please send Cricket a note so that she'll know who you are! Cricket is asking for minimum donations of $5.00 when possible because Paypal deducts a small fee for transactions on the receiver's end, but any amount will do! For every $2.50 that is donated from a sponsor, Cricket will personally donate 1 pound of dry dog or cat food or one item from the THHS wishlist. Click on her banner above for more information.

New Year's Resolution: Touch the Life of Just One Shelter Pet!

This list is a modified version of suggestions from PETS 911.

  1. Volunteer
Volunteers are invaluable to shelters and rescues to maintain the everyday operations of the organization. Individuals don't have to volunteer 30+ hours a week -- even an hour or two per week helps the animals. Of course, more hours are always much appreciated!

Volunteers may assist as dog walkers or socialize with the cats -- even cleaning out a litter pan or sweeping the area is greatly appreciated. Each volunteer quickly learns that their efforts, large or small, are "repaid" tenfold in animal love.

PETS 911 lists volunteer opportunities in many neighborhoods. Click here to view.

  2. Foster
Foster care enables shelters and rescues to care for the animals that come to them, without having to euthanize for lack of "space" within a facility. Yes, it can be challenging watching and cleaning up after five kitties housed in a spare bathroom. It isn't glamorous, but the smiles and laughter experienced make it all worthwhile.

At certain times of the year, organizations will be overrun with kittens and puppies. If foster "parents" can take a litter for a few weeks until they are old enough to be spayed, neutered and adopted out (approximately 8 weeks or 2 lbs.), then these innocent creatures gain a second chance at life. Without these caring volunteers, many of the organizations would be unable to care for the incredible influx of animals during breeding season.

There are also adult pets that temporarily need a foster home where they can recuperate after a surgery or illness, after which they can be adopted out to a new loving family. To read about the foster care experiences of the PETS 911 team, click here.

To find organizations in your area that need foster help, click here for Indiana or click here for outside of Indiana.

  3. Donate
Many shelter and rescue organizations rely on the kindness and generosity of community donations to help keep their doors open for needy pets in their area. Even many of the government-funded animal control agencies are under-funded and utilize donations in their quest to save more animals each year.

We encourage you to support these organizations with any size contribution -- whether it is a small monthly donation, one larger sum, or even writing them into your will. To view a list of organizations in your area who need assistance, click here.

Better yet, help us eliminate the need for these organizations by supporting our efforts to enable owners and caregivers to spay and neuter their animals. For more information on how to donate to Spay-Neuter League, click here.

  4. Spay or Neuter Your Pet
Overpopulation of unwanted pets is a serious issue -- one that could be easily remedied with spaying and neutering of pets. For every kitten or puppy born outside a shelter and sold or given away, a kitten, cat, puppy or dog inside a shelter has one less potential home. With this sad fact in mind, we encourage each of you to spay or neuter your pet.

To find a list of veterinarians in your community, click here. For low-cost spay-neuter clinics, as well as potential financial assistance for spaying/neutering, please visit our Home Page or the PETS 911 Spay & Neuter section.

  5. Adopt
When considering bringing a new pet into your home, please adopt. Every adoption saves a pet's life – and those who have adopted pets will agree that the pet saved knows it. Shelter pets are grateful to have a warm, loving home and demonstrate that appreciation to their new "parents" with undying loyalty.

Whether searching for a mixed breed or purebred, shelters and rescues offer a broad selection. If searching for a specific breed, other resources include breed-specific rescue organizations, which are located across the nation.

Keep in mind that mixed breeds offer a delightful potpourri of personality traits – and many owners claim that a mutt is the "best breed" out there! They are also generally healthier, since most of the breed-interited defects are not passed to them (wider gene pool).

If you need help locating a shelter or rescue (including breed-specific rescues) in your community, visit PETS 911's adoption section.

Please take advantage of at least one of these five wonderful ways to positively impact the life of a shelter pet. It will have a lasting impact on your life as well!

Spay/Neuter No-Kill Petition

Sign the Spay/Neuter Petition

Project Spay/Neuter needs your animal loving help and support to be a voice for those who can not speak and to sign the petition today to help pass mandatory FREE spay and neuter laws in every state in America. The petition requests that the state implement:

  1. A statewide Free Spay/Neuter program for all public county kill shelters to provide free spay/neutering services to all county residents. This program would be cloned to duplicate the same free spay/neuter program that has already been implemented at the Miami-Dade Police Animal Services shelter in Dade County, Florida.
  2. A special pet adoption, spay/neuter educational awareness marketing and advertising budget for public kill shelters to use to help save and adopt more homeless animals into more communities. This budget would include but would not be limited to television, cable TV, radio, website, newspapers, bill boards, city buses and print pet adoption advertising to help increase pet adoption rates, while helping to decrease the number of healthy adoptable homeless animals from being needlessly killed and more homeless animals from being born.
  3. A no-kill time limit shelter policy for any healthy adoptable animals that will not be killed when they are received at a public county kill shelter facility, if that public kill shelter has not reached their maximum overcapacity conditions if both the above A & B guidelines are passed.

The Repeal Breed Specific Legislation Law in Denver Petition

Pit Bulls in Denver, CO are being seized from their owners and euthanized for no reason other than their breed. The truth is that when raised in loving homes, Pit Bulls are no more aggressive towards people than any other breed of dog. Visit the website and sign the petition to repeal Denver's Breed Specific Legislation Law (BSL).

Help put an end to dog breed discrimination by insurance companies!
